We’ve all heard the phrase, “way of life.” Living in a certain culture or region presents a certain way of life; the city, for example, as opposed to the country; the East versus the West. We also develop our own personal views on how we go about our daily “way of life:” how we work and play, how we spend our free time and how we eat and exercise.

Eating junk food is a way of life the same as healthy eating. Only junk food will get you to the doctor faster and give you more sicknesses down the road. Your mother told you to eat your vegetables and it wasn’t just because she had gone to the effort to cook them.

There are many ways to sustain a healthy life; for example:

  1. Eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods. Your body needs more than 40 different nutrients for good health, which means your daily food selection should include bread and other whole-grain products; fruits; vegetables; dairy products; and meat, poultry, fish and other protein foods. (as long as you don’t have food allergies to any of these options).
  2. Enjoy plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. You’ve heard it before and it bears repeating; You need 6-11 servings from the bread, rice, cereal and pasta group; 2-4 servings of fruit and 3-5 servings of vegetables. Ask your local nutrionist to get a variety of recipes so you can enjoy these foods.
  3. Remember portion control. If you keep portion sizes reasonable, it’s easier to eat the foods you want and stay healthy. The recommended serving of cooked meat is 3 ounces, similar in size to a deck of playing cards. A medium piece of fruit is 1 serving and a cup of pasta equals 2 servings. A pint of ice cream contains four servings. Check out the Food Guide Pyramid for information.
  4. Make changes gradually. It’s hard to change eating habits overnight and in fact, you shouldn’t, because going too fast could lead you back to the bad food road you just exited. Begin modestly and you’ll see that you can change your way of life easily and make food as satisfying to your palette as it was before.

Remember to eat small meals and eat often. Look up information on food allergies, because these can impact your health, as well as eating for different blood types. Respond to what your body wants more than what you need emotionally and you’ll be on the way to living a better way of life.

Because our business is specialized, we are able to focus on your liability needs in a way that bigger companies are not. Our team of associates represent over 50 years of collective experience in this field, and we are able to serve a large client base while maintaining a small-office approach.

As we recognize March as National Nutrition Month, we also celebrate National Nutritionist Day on Monday, March 11, which helps to recognize the good work nutritionists do to help people lead better and healthier lives.

In thanking all of our clients who are nutritionists, CPH wants to also provide ways to

celebrate this day and one way to do that is to spread the word on the good work nutritionists do to improve our lifestyles.

Both nutritionists and registered dietitians meet stringent academic and professional requirements, including earning at least a bachelor’s degree, completing a supervised practice program and passing a registration examination. Acquiring professional liability insurance is a part of these requirements.

The expertise of the nutritionist is revered throughout the medical community and services provided by a nutritionist can help in lowering medical costs, keep people on their jobs and prevent prolonged hospital stays. Nutritionists help to get people on track by recommending ways in which they can not only improve their health through food but increase their stamina and energy levels for physical activity. The right education can go a long way in fighting many health complications such as cancer, obesity and heart disease and nutritionists can aid these battles by altering how people relate to food.

National Nutritionist Day is a part of National Nutrition month. Every March people in the dietitian and nutrition fields are recognized for the work they do in focusing attention on the importance of making informed food and nutrition choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

The sixth annual Registered Dietitian Day falls on Wednesday, March 13. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics honors registered dietitians because, as the nation’s food and nutrition experts, they improve the health of their patients and community. Registered dietitians are advocates for advancing the nutritional status of Americans and people around the world, and this day honors their commitment.

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, a registered dietitian “serves as an integral liaison in helping individuals and communities make changes for a healthy delicious diet.” So help to spread the word about the good work of registered dietitians.

Here are some of the ways in which they impact our lives:

1. You have prediabetes and want to stave off diabetes. A registered dietitian

can change your life by teaching you skills that will help you lose and keep

off weight and keep diabetes at bay.

2. Your community has high levels of obesity. A registered dietitian works with public health, government, schools and other local leaders to create wellness programs that promote healthful eating and physical activity for everyone.

3. You are a marketing manager for a large food company and know consumers’ preference for good-tasting food that is healthy. A registered dietitian can make the connection and work with your food scientists to develop new products that will be successful in the marketplace.

4. You want to improve your performance in sports. A registered dietitian can help you set goals to achieve results — whether you’re running a marathon, skiing or jogging with your dog.

5. You need to feed your family healthier foods but you do not cook. A registered dietitian who has special culinary skills can teach you how to cook in a simple, convenient way.

7. Your teenager has issues with food and eating healthfully. A registered dietitian can assist with eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia and overweight issues.

8. You just had your first child, are concerned the baby is not eating enough and need help and confidence for breastfeeding. A registered dietitian can provide guidance and assurance that you and your infant are getting enough iron, vitamin D, fluoride and B vitamins.

CPH would like to thank all of our clients who are dietitians and we encourage all of them to celebrate this day. It is only through the personal care and education given by dietitians and nutritionists that we can learn to live better lives.

Whether you’re a licensed practical nurse, a registered nurse or an emergency room nurse – each with varying job duties and responsibilities – all have one thing in common: each nursing segment needs professional liability insurance. You may think that the insurance handled by the facility in which you work for is enough coverage for you, however chances are the facility’s insurance won’t cover you should an incident arise. And if the hospital loses a lawsuit, it could, in turn, sue the nurse to recover damages.

Even if you’re an exceptional nurse, you could still be sued, and you would still be responsible for your legal fees and any expenses incurred during the trial. Professional liability insurance for the LPN, the RN or the ER nurse is vital to ensuring the integrity of the profession and providing the nurse with essential protection should a malpractice case arise.

The most common malpractice claims against nurses center on the following:

  • Failure to follow standards of care
  • Failure to use equipment in a responsible manner
  • Failure to communicate: In some cases, failure to communicate can cause or contribute to failure to rescue (failure to act on a patient condition, resulting in a code or a patient’s death).
  • Failure to document: There is a simple assessment used by the courts and that is, if it wasn’t documented, it wasn’t done.
  • Failure to assess and monitor
  • Failure to act as patient advocate. This increasingly involves challenging a physician’s orders, whether these are related to medications, respiratory management, or discharge decisions, and many other aspects of patient care.

Anyone in the nursing industry deserves to cover themselves; professional liability insurance for nurses provides nurses peace of mind as they administer care to the sick – you need to worry about the people in your care. Don’t also worry about whether you are properly covered while administering that care.

Treating someone with an eating disorder is not easy. The condition is both emotionally and physically complicated and every dietitian should take care when helping patients recover from what could be a deadly problem.

As eating disorders have become more popularized through the internet and other media, treating the disorder also becomes mired in community, family and cultural relations. Say you have failed to recognize the disorder or the person refuses to help themselves. Perhaps the disorder is in its early stages and you believe that it could be easily brought under control, failing to understand all of the underlying reasons for the disorder.

Or perhaps your patient does a good job of hiding the disorder, so that it is barely detectable. This means the dietitian and/or nutritionist has to perform a bit of detective work to get to the root of the situation and that sometimes means recognizing the early signs of the disorder before it becomes full blown.

The first rule of thumb is to get rid of the notion that someone with a disorder is underweight. We know through research and experience that this is not the case; the mere fact of eating is only a part of the problem. Treating the whole person is increasingly necessary for the problem to be brought under control.

Sometimes registered dietitians, no matter how careful they are, become targets for malpractice lawsuits when it comes to eating disorders. According to an article in Today’s Dietitian, “It’s a dietitian’s worst nightmare to become embroiled in one of today’s high-profile medical malpractice lawsuits. Once upon a time, dietitians counted themselves lucky, as they could smugly cite that not a single dietitian had been successfully sued in a malpractice case …”. But as the article stressed, times are changing.

Each malpractice case is decided individually on the basis of the evidence presented in court. There are general principles and guidelines that govern the courts’ decision-making process. A patient seeking legal redress must prove actual injury, a relationship of duty between the parties, breach of that duty, and a cause-and-effect relationship between the breach of duty and the injury suffered.

How many times did you go back to the plan of care with new interventions? Did you talk to the family? Did you get the doctor involved? If they lose weight, develop decubitus ulcers, and you do not have proper defensive documentation, the liability falls on the care plan team and the dietitian.

The bottom line is ensuring the correct amount of professional liability insurance coverage. Dietitians and nutritionists, the article states, should get at least $1 million for their own coverage. Moreover, dietitians can minimize their risk by making sure that you are confident in the advice that you are giving and the treatment that you are providing; making certain to update skills, and to document, document, document. No one will ever punish for over-documentation. You should also keep a good rapport with the family and provide the best and most respectful care possible.

Also known as Hypertension, a national average of 68 million Americans are living with this ‘silent killer,’ making the odds as high as every 1 in 3 adults – yikes! The good news? High blood pressure can be controlled, reduced, and best of all, prevented with proactive measures!

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention officially proclaimed May as National Blood Pressure Awareness Month starting in 1984 with an official motto of: “know your numbers.” Blood pressure readings have two numbers, the systolic pressure (the higher number) and diastolic pressure (the lower number). Ideally your numbers should read around 120 over 80, but usually the lower the pressure, the better. High blood pressure is typically diagnosed when your systolic pressure exceeds 140.

Two of the leading causes of death in the United States, heart attack and stroke, are primarily a result of living with long-term high blood pressure. It also contributes to the onset of other physical impairments including congestive heart failure and kidney disease. In addition to the 68 million recognized patients, about 8% of all U.S. adults have hypertension but have never been diagnosed. The most frequently cited cause is due to the high content of sodium found in processed, packaged, and restaurant food like bread, cold cuts, pizza and poultry being identified as main culprits.

It’s absolutely imperative to have your blood pressure checked regularly, and to live mindfully in order to maintain normal pressure, however if you’re near or above unsafe levels now is always better than later when seeking out professional help to revitalize your health! CPH is proud to support our Allied Health Professionals including nutritionists, dietitians, physicians, and counselors in their mission of bringing better health to their communities!

Unlike many diseases, high blood pressure can rapidly decrease when patients are committed to reducing sodium intake. Start today!

Live Heart Healthy:

  • More fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Consciously read nutrition labels and choose lower sodium options
  • Maintain a healthy body weight. Make light exercise a habit.
  • Cook from home to control the amount of sodium put into your meals
  • Inquire about low sodium options at restaurants
  • Reduce or eliminate smoking and/or alcohol consumption
